How to differentiate between Seamless and MS ERW pipes?

ERW stands for Electric Resistance Welding pipe, produced by rolling metal and then welding it longitudinally across its length. Whereas seamless pipe is produced by extruding the metal to the length you require; hence ERW pipe have welded joints in its cross-section and seamless pipe does not have any joints throughout its length.

As discussed in seamless pipe, there are no welding or joints and is manufactured from solid round billets. The specification is set as per the wall thickness & dimensional size, generally varying between from 1/8 inch to 26 inch OD.As it is suitable for a high pressure applications Its eligible for industries like hydrocarbon industries, Oil & gas exploration, refineries & drilling. Also applicable for air & hydraulic cylinders, bearings, boilers & automobiles.

ERW Pipes are welded longitudinally. It is manufactured from strip Coil & can be manufactured maximum up to 24 inch OD. ERW pipe cold formed from a ribbon of steel extracted from a series of rollers and made into a tube which is fused through a electric charge. It’s one of the main uses is to lower/medium the pressure; hence can be used for transportation of water/oil. KOSC industries is one of the leading manufacturer & exporter of MS ERW Pipes.

How to identify Seamless or MS ERW pipes?

If you are new to the industry the most basic way to identify is to simply read the stencil on the side corner of the pipe.

If it says, TYPE ‘S’ – It means seamless

Seamless steel pipes looks like a hollow section pipe with no seam around the square, circle or rectangular steel. It is made of the capillary tube through the hole, then through hot-rolled, cold rolled is made. Majorly these pipes are used in conveying fluids. It is also used in the manufacture of structural parts as well as mechanical parts such as automotive drive shafts, drill pipe, bicycle frame and construction using steel scaffolding.

If it says, TYPE ‘F’ – It means Furnace.

If it says, Type ‘E’ – It means electrical resist welded.

Welded pipes are also known as pipe, plate or strip is made through the curl made of steel after welding. The production process of welded steel is simple, efficient & more varieties, specification, equipment, less capital but the strength of less than seamless steel pipe.

This is the way to identify if the pipe is seamless or ERW.

There are certain presumption myths that ‘seamless’ pipes does not have flaws and ‘welded’ pipes have an inherent flaw throughout the length of each tube. It is being marketed and accepted by the audience (designers, builders) with very limited or no experience. However, the reality is each and every product has its own flaws and strengths.
